Canon 2x EF Extender (Teleconverter)(Doubler)

The first version of Canon's 2x converter doubles focal length of most Canon telephoto lenses but 2 f-stops are lost. For example, f/2 becomes f/4, f2.8 becomes f/5.6, and f/4 becomes f/8.

Because the Canon EF 2x Extender is multiplying the aberrations/flaws of the lens it is mounted behind by 2x, there will be noticeable degradation in image quality when using the 2x. Sharpness and contrast take a hit with all but the best lenses. Additional Chromatic Aberration is introduced as is slight barrel distortion, but vignetting is somewhat reduced. The best 2x results will be made using a very sharp lens such as the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens.

PLEASE NOTE:
attempting to mount a Canon extender on incompatible lenses may damage the rear lens element. Canon extenders simply do not fit behind the rear lens element on Canon's non-extender-compatible lenses.

As a rule, but subject to change, the compatible lenses include fixed focal length L lenses 135mm and longer, zoom L lenses at least 70mm on their wide end and Canon TS-E Tilt-Shift lenses.

Auto-focus may or may not work depending on the lens but manual focus is always available.
- Autofocus is possible on any EOS camera when combined with a lens having an f/4 or faster maximum aperture.
- If the lens is attached to an EOS camera having multiple focusing points and an extender attached, only the center focusing point will be usable for AF.
